Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse - Austria

The Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse sits at the end of the Montafon valley, connecting Partenen in Voralberg with Galtür in Tyrol.

This part of Austria borders Switzerland and the names and places have a Swiss feel. The road is a true gem of 34 hairpins and its gentle rhythmic nature makes it a joy to ride. This is one of Austria's most famous roads and rightly so.

Bieler Höhe - 2037m

There are several hydroelectric reservoirs in the Montafon, and this road was originally built to service those installations. The high point of the road is the Bieler Höhe, beside the Silvretta Stausee, at an altitude of 2,037 m. From here, a spectacular view opens across the lake toward Piz Buin and its glacier. The reservoir was constructed between 1937 and 1951, regrettably involving forced labour during World War II. Today, exhibits on the dam document the history of its construction.

Work on the road began in 1925 and it was initially completed in 1954 to serve the reservoirs. It was later expanded to its current form by 1961. The result is a remarkable piece of engineering, both in design and in how naturally it threads its way through the mountains. As the Montafon valley comes to an abrupt end, the road begins to climb in beautifully flowing switchbacks, passing the first reservoir before continuing deeper into the mountains toward the Bieler Höhe and the second, impressive reservoir.

I have ridden this road many times, and it is always a wonderful experience. At 15.2 km in length with 1,015 m of elevation gain, it is not the longest, steepest, or highest climb, yet it remains one of my favourites. The road has an almost calming character, alternating between pine forests and open views of the valley below. It is a place where you can truly find your happy place on the bike.

Switchbacks

After leaving Partenen, the climb starts at the vehicle toll gate. Almost immediately it launches itself into its famous switchbacks which carry you high above the valley in no time. These are true marvels of road engineering for their rhythmic nature, the interplay between pine forests and open vistas of the surrounding mountains of the Verwall group and as they are just wonderfully crafted. For anyone who loves switchbacks, these are in the 95th percentile.

It is certainly my happy place.

Water and valley

All good things end eventually and after 30 wonderful hairpin bends, the road reaches the first reservoir, shimmering in green against the mountains. The road flattens along the lake to take a breather. The landscape is open now, a wide valley with ridges and deep lying creeks. The roads goes deep into the mountain valley, negotiates a couple of further switchbacks before arriving after a long straight at the Bieler Höhe and the wonderful views of the Pitz Buin. There are two hotels to take a break, Gasthaus Pitz Buin and the Silvrettahaus. Both have great patios to enjoy the atmosphere and unbeatable views.

Return

Continuing on to Galtür is less spectacular. After 3-4 bends at the reservoir level, the road is a long straight all the way down to Galtür. The mountains though become even more impressive and in comparison the Voralberg side of the climb, this ride is more exposed, more windy, more isolated and feeling more rugged and industrial.

Once back at the Bieler Höhe, the downhill to Partenen through all these wonderful switchbacks awaits. A road to savour on the way down as much as on the way up.

What a road and what a ride!

Route Tip: The Ride to the Bieler Höhe can be extended to the Kopssee which is another reservoir lake. Dropping down to Galtür after the Silvretta Stausee and then climbing a short climb up the Zeinisjoch to the Kopssee for more Lake & Mountain action. There is a direct road back to Partenen from here but that is more suited to MTBs and best to return the same way you came. Make a stop in Galtür for coffee and cake!
